THE SCIENCE

Saffron contains safranal, the active component of the plant, which is considered too pungent for culinary dishes. Saffron works by sparking neurotransmitters, which increase serotonin levels in the brain, a hormone known to boost mood. Serotonin creates a feeling of well-being, affects satiety, and prevents compulsive behaviour leading to weight loss.

Is There Any Proof Behind Saffron Extract?

A clinical study was conducted in May 2011 on a group of healthy and slightly overweight women over an 8-week period. These women were not restricted in their caloric intake, and were allowed to eat at will.

Half of the group was fed 1 capsule of saffron extract (176.5 mg) a day, and the other half a placebo. The women kept a daily snacking log, and weight and inches lost was measured. It was found at the end of the 8-week period that the women who consumed the saffron extract had "a significantly greater body weight reduction than placebo."
