The Sleep-Rx™ formulation includes Valeriana officianalis extract (valerian) standardized for a minimum of 8% valernic acids ("valerian" means "to be strong or healthy" in Latin), which is approved in Europe for its ability to ease nervous tension and assist in restful sleep due to its sedative properties. Valerian exerts its primary mode of action through direct interaction with gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors and also by triggering the release of GABA. Piper methysticum extract (kava) is another sleep-promoting compound in Sleep-Rx™, which, like valerian, also acts on GABA receptors. Kava also blocks the uptake of norepinephrine. This allows kava to contribute to easing anxiety, nervousness, muscle tension, and sleeplessness. L-theanine (N-ethyl-L-glutamine), the source of which is green tea, is another Sleep-Rx™ nutraceutical agent that offers a plethora of beneficial metabolic pathways related to brain function.
